cause plant circles in African deserts

These fairy rings of perennial grass species dot arid, sandy sweeps from Angola to South Africa and have inspired ecological and mythological speculation about their origins. After 40 trips to study the water distribution and life around the fairy rings, Norbert Jrgens of the University of Hamburg in Germany concludes that the sand termite Psammotermes allocerus is the hidden force behind them.

Among the hundreds of species that thrive in these rings, the sand termite is the only one found throughout the range, he reports in the March 29 Science.

Termites unintentionally engineer these marvels by eating the roots of grasses, creating a bald patch that becomes the rings center. The subsurface depths of that patch stay moister than neighboring areas, where plants draw the water out of the soil. The circles bulls eye favors not only the moistureloving termites, but also a belt around its edge of perennial grasses and many other species that couldnt survive baked sand.

As ecosystem engineers, Jrgens says, the sand termite rivals the beaver.

Am I correct in my interpretation that the rings of perrenial grasses are there because they can draw on the moisture not only of the soils directly below themselves, but also on the adjacent soils within the rings. This would indicate that the grasses can be present in otherwise inhospitable conditions because of the lack of competition for the water within the circles. They can draw from a larger area than would be possible were the vegetation more densely packed. In the latter case, a different species would crowd them out.

The termites should be eating their roots too. The ability of the grasses to survive where other plants dont suggests either the grasses have some mode of discouraging termite foraging some biodefense, better ability to repair termite damage, or alternately that the moisture in rootfree soils is being drawn laterally through the soils to the roots by the capillary suctions so the plants in the ring dont have to have roots extend into the ring.

One other thought concerns the termite food supply. Perhaps the continuing production of roots by the surrounding grass ring provides a sustainable condition. The termites dont overgraze during most moisture conditions so the grasses can survive the grazing losses while still getting enough water to produce enough biomass to keep the termites from expanding the rings and destroying the grasses. Probably during droughts the rings would expand, but during wetter periods perhaps the grasses would actually encroach on the bare areas. This would be an interesting study. I also wonder how far the plants could draw moisture laterally from the soils beyond the extent of their roots. An interesting question for soil physics. I dont know the answer, but am curious.

I also wonder what limits the termite population so they dont overeat their food supply? As the ring diameter increases, geometry will have certain effects. The amount of biomass in the ring will increase linearly with the radius by the simple formula relating perimeter to radius. The travel distance from the center of the circle also increases, increasing the energy cost to the termites to travel to their food supply. Also, as the ring diameter increases, the curvature of the grassy ring decreases, becoming progressively more like a straight line. If the distance of effective capillary draw from within the ring is significant and is less than the radius of the circle a guess, I dont know, then the area of the wedge of soil from which adjacent grasses draw will increase as the curvature decreases, adding a bit more water to the adjacent grass plants as the ring grows. The significance of this geometric factor depends on the distance of capillary draw and radius of the circle and will vary as the ring grows.

All of this speculation is building fairy castles in the air as this is outside my field of expertise. I know little about soil physics and capillary movements in soils and plant root action and next to nothing about termite ecology, its energy balances, and other factors that control termite population. This is not how I would proceed were I actually studying this as a scientist, but is fun as a dilletante exercise.

In case anyone is wondering, I am only making dilletante comments on this because I dont subscribe to Science so I cant read the article itself to learn more about the underlying study and also because I cant afford the time to pursue all the things I find interesting or I really would become just a dilletante. Unfortunately, there is only one of me and I can readily generate more work than ten of me could do in the first iteration and then exponentially more than that as the multiple mes pursues the ongoing expansion of the things that interest me. As I have leisure to broaden my interests, I will still have to continually truncate what I wish to pursue to keep things manageable. The world has multiple wonders that keep a curious mind interested, but one cant pursue everything and still achieve any real understanding of anything.

Sarsgaard says dark characters wildly different

NEW YORK AP Peter Sarsgaard is eating up rave reviews for his latest dark characters: A porn stars manipulative husband in the biopic Lovelace and the violent yet sympathetic deathrow inmate in the AMC series The Killing.

In a recent interview, the actor said connecting with his audience feels like a reward. Its like, Yay, I did a good job! Thats fantastic.

In Lovelace, which opens Friday, Sarsgaard is Chuck Traynor, husband of the Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace. As Lovelace later alleged, the film shows Traynor coercing his wife into the pornography business and physically and emotionally abusing her, even forcing her to have sex with other men.

Amanda Seyfried, who plays Lovelace, called Sarsgaards Traynor malicious and selfish. Cast mate Debi Mazar said when in character, Sarsgaard was terrifying and creepy on set.

In TVs The Killing, which had its season finale Aug. 4, Sarsgaard played Ray Seward, who swings from fits of uncontrollable rage and maliciously gleeful taunts to surprisingly vulnerable and sympathetic displays while on deathrow for killing his wife.

While both characters are violent, to Sarsgaard they are wildly different. . Ray would not hang out with Chuck for 5 minutes and would have no respect for him whatsoever.

To Sarsgaard, Chuck is a lost man who thinks hes found something real with Lovelace and then turns violent when he feels like hes losing her and becomes jealous of the attention she gets. Sarsgaard described Ray as very disciplined with a kind of inner nobility and strong ideas about whats right and wrong.

Finding the nuances in seemingly seamy, broken characters is already a specialty for Sarsgaard, who gained notice with his portrayal of such edgy characters as the homophobic John Lotter in Boys Dont Cry.

Sarsgaard said he thinks seeing the dark and light in a character is being like a realist because if you look at people every day, you see both things all the time.

Sarsgaard said hes been observing peoples behavior since childhood, when he was exposed to a variety of environments because his family moved around a lot. I was an only child. I lived in 12 different places. I absorbed people constantly, he said. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Carrie Underwood performs in Abbotsford

Fans on the floor were on their feet throughout the concert, joined by many up in the seats, and the screaming was nonstop. A few practical jokes by the stage crew, including shooting each other with water and nerf guns, provided light moments.

Underwoods band consisted of a female backup singer, and musicians playing an alternating mix of fiddle, keyboards, guitars, bass and drums.

At one point, the stage separated, with a portion carrying Underwood and three of her musicians over the audience.

The final stop on the yearlong tour kicked off with Underwoods highenergy single Good Girl, off the 2012 platinumselling album, Blown Away, and featured numerous hits from the Billboards number one country album chart.

Underwood performed, Jesus, Take the Wheel, and Before He Cheats, from her Some Hearts album, released in 2005. She also performed Cowboy Casanova and Temporary Home from the 2009 Play On album. All three albums topped Billboard, making the singer the second country artist in the charts 47year history to have three consecutive albums debut at number one.

The concert not only entertained the audience, it supported a greater charitable cause. At a point in the show, Underwood announced that one dollar from every ticket sold would go toward the Red Cross and their efforts. She proudly noted that her tour had donated $1 million in total. American shows sponsored the American Red Cross, while performances in Canada sponsored the Canadian Red Cross.

Over the course of her extremely successful career, Underwood has sold over 15 million albums and had 17 number one singles. She has received numerous awards and nominations since her debut in 2005, including the Academy of Country Music s Entertainer of the Year, Top Female Vocalist, Top New Female Vocalist, nine American Country Music Awards, six Peoples Choice awards and in 2010 a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song, which she recorded and cowrote.

Auteur Theory in Film Criticism

Sadly, it is far more complex than that. One example would be the theme of the distant father in Steven Spielbergs work. In addition to this, an auteur must have a differentiating style, almost instantly recognisable.

At first it seems like a perfectly plausible theory: the director is responsible for the film, and so can be judged as to whether or not they are an auteur. But conversely, you could argue that the director has the ultimate control, and is therefore responsible for the films final output. In a collective medium, it is almost impossible to establish who has the most control.

Another problem with the theory is that it creates a hierarchy within film circles. Those who subscribe to it would automatically assume that an auteur is a better film maker than a normal director, many of whom might make wonderful films.

The most common examples given to support auteur theory are Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and JeanLuc Godard. Each presents a strong case, though perhaps the most well known example for modern filmgoers would be that of Tim Burton.

Case Study: Tim BurtonOne example of a director that could be considered an auteur, Tim Burtons films have a very distinct style, and he often deals with similar themes in his work. In general, the lead character is separated from the norm of society in some way a misfit. In the character of Edward Scissorhands, this idea is taken to the very extreme: the main character cannot even touch another person. Other examples of this character type include Batman, Beetlejuice, and to a certain extent, Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Burtons movies also have a distinct style, generally sporting a very Gothic feel. In addition, Burton is known for using stopmotion animation in his films, the prime examples being The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. He is also known for reusing actors and actresses, in particular Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Danny Elfman regularly provides the right music for the soundtrack. Tim Burton has directed many movies, each of which can be examined and compared for similar styles and recurring themes.

Metteurs en Scne Having established that some directors are considered auteurs and why, it seems sensible to ask what becomes of those who do not fall into this category. Such directors were dubbed metteurs en scne by the renowned filmmaker Franois Truffaut, and though they may be perfectly good directors, they are not considered auteurs, because they do not have the artistic control required.

Perhaps the best way to illustrate this concept is to present a director that could realistically be dubbed a metteur en scne. A good example is Peter Jackson, the director responsible primarily for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The first thing to consider is that, despite the fact he has previously written his own films, in adapting someone elses work he removes a certain amount of artistic control. In addition, he is subject to the economic pressures of Hollywood, which evidently rates artistic design below economic success; indeed, it is hard to find a mainstream Hollywood auteur, but not impossible. Although Jackson does have a large body of work, he lacks any overriding themes or recognisable artistic design. In essence, it all boils down to personal vision and whether a director is able to impose their own world view upon a film, which Jackson does not do. Therefore, although he is a perfectly good director, he lacks the credentials to be labelled an auteur.

To observe an auteur in action, Hitchcock is always a good place to start. Vertigo is a particularly good example, as it delves into several of Hitchcocks own obsessions and how they came about plus its a solid piece of film making. A brilliant insight into Hitchcock is presented in Truffauts biography, Hitchcock.

For a more modern take on film making, Tim Burton is one recommendation. In particular, A Nightmare Before Christmas contains many of his own personal touches. If Burtons movies interest you, then it is also worth investigating the book Burton on Burton, which contains an extensive analysis of Burtons films by the director himself.

Carlisle to get share of

The city has been named as one of six founding members of the Sustainable Food Cities Network, thanks to its work transforming food culture.

The network, being launched today, is part of the UK first Sustainable Food Cities programme which uses healthy and sustainable food in the fight against social, economic and environmental issues like obesity, food poverty and climate change.

As a city every school, hospital, restaurant and workplace canteen in Carlisle will serve only healthy and sustainable meals. Project leaders also hope everyone will have access to training on how to cook, the chance to buy local food and support local producers and businesses, and give sellers and producers the opportunity to showcase their products.

Tom Andrews from Sustainable Food Cities said: is about creating cities where good food is visible and celebrated in every corner and where people right to eat healthy and sustainable food is embedded into every relevant policy and strategy. Food City is made up of Carlisle City Council, Carlisle College, Cumbria County Council, local sustainability groups, producers and businesses.

Councillor Anne Quilter, the city council portfolio holder for culture, health, leisure and young people, said: delighted that Carlisle is one of the founding members and that we in the running to access some national funding.

of this would have happened without the support of partners. We look forward to taking the next steps towards being a Sustainable Food City. part of its bid to become a Sustainable Food City, a draft Food Charter for Carlisle has been drawn up, setting out its aim to create a thriving local economy, health and wellbeing for all, a reduction in the city ecofootprint, encourage lifelong learning and skills, and establish resilient closeknit communities..

Burnley FC unveils major plan to create state

Mr Darnley added: This will provide the club with a necessary asset, which will be in line with the clubs overall vision of moving forward, with nextstage status being gained as a result of the redevelopment. The club will be able to attact more youth players and improve existing relationships with junior football clubs from the local area.He has also maintained that the works would be contained within the sites current footprint and not affect the nearby Gawthorpe Hall estate, an issue which has been discussed with officials from the National Trust.Former Burnley MP Mr Pike said that the club had been attempting to make progress with the Gawthorpe redevelopment for some time and that the new plans were encouraging. Our great days were built on our youth policy so I would fully support this, he said.Perhaps we are never going to have the big money, which other clubs may generate, but if we can attract more young players, by improving our facilities, then we can remain competitive for the future.Last January the club, under joint chairmen John Banaszkiewicz and Mike Garlick, proposed a bond scheme which would see Turf Moor and Gawthorpe bought from Longside Properties Ltd, under a new vehicle, Burnley FC Holdings, Ultimately it is hoped that their retention will place the club on a sounder financial footing and enable investment in the training and developing of new players. Why the interest? first 3 comments, all from Rovers fans.
