6 killed by Thai soldiers during protests

BANGKOK AP Six unarmed people killed at a Buddhist temple during a military crackdown on antigovernment protesters in Thailands capital three years ago were slain by bullets fired by Thai soldiers, an inquest found Tuesday.

The inquest by the Bangkok South Criminal Court said that four men and one woman, mostly Red Shirt protesters who took refuge in Pathum Wanaram temple near the protest site, were killed by highvelocity bullets fired by Thai soldiers who were on the citys elevated train tracks, while another man was shot by soldiers from the ground.

The findings are a stark reminder of the bloody battle between the demonstrators and the government under thenPrime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. The Red Shirts, consisting mostly of supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and antiestablishment protesters, were calling for parliament to be dissolved and for fresh elections to be held.

The findings came at a time of renewed political tension, as protest groups gathered in Bangkok this week to oppose a bill that would grant amnesty to protesters who were involved in political demonstrations since the 2006 military coup that ousted Thaksin for alleged corruption and disrespect to the monarchy.

About 90 people were killed over several weeks in 2010 when demonstrators occupied downtown Bangkok for nine weeks before they dispersed by the deadly army crackdown.

The inquest dismissed claims by a soldier that there was an unidentified armed group near the temple when the shootings happened, saying there was not enough evidence. It also said the six people were not using any weapons when they were killed.

Abhisits government approved the use of live ammunition under limited conditions and deployed sharpshooters and snipers during the demonstration.

Nattapat Akkahad, a younger brother of the slain volunteer nurse, Kamonkade Akkahad, said he was pleased with the ruling and called for the army personnel responsible to be prosecuted.

Im so glad that I dont know what to say. This just confirms our stance that no amnesty should be granted to states security officers who acted beyond what was necessary, he said. The soldiers must be held accountable.

Relatives of the others said they were content with the detailed findings and also called for prosecution of those responsible.

The inquest said it was not known who fired the bullets but said the security forces came from a ranger battalion and an infantry battalion of the Royal Thai Army.

One of the judges also said there was no evidence that weapons were piled inside the temple.

Thai Army deputy spokesman Col. Winthai Suvari said it is too soon to blame soldiers for the deaths.

Dont jump to the conclusion just yet because this is merely part of a trial, Winthai told reporters on Tuesday. More evidence and testimonies must be taken into account when the actual prosecution occurs.

Society knows very well that the weapons seized by the protesters were found in the temple . and neither soldiers, nor police could access that area, Winthai said, adding there were conflicts in testimonies that need resolving.

The protesters in Bangkok this week want to pressure lawmakers to withdraw the bill that was proposed by the ruling Pheu Thai Party, fearing it could pave the way for Thaksins return.

Thaksin was sentenced to two years in jail on a conflict of interest charge in 2008, but he escaped punishment by living abroad in selfimposed exile.

Tuesday findings were the latest in a series of inquests in the years ago. In previous cases, the court ruled that five people were killed by guns used by military personnel, and that another person an Italian photographer killed by bullets that was fired from the direction of security forces, while two inquests were inconclusive on who committed the killings.

Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Tuesday also gave a testimony in a hearing for the inquest of a slain Reuters Japanese cameraman, Hiroyuki Muramoto, who was shot dead on April 10, 2010, during the first round of a crackdown on protesters.

Attorneys will give the inquest results to investigators to be used in criminal prosecutions.

The Department of Special Investigation began a murder investigation of Abhisit and his thendeputy Suthep Thaugsuban last year, but charges have not been brought to court.

Audi R8 2014 pictures

The Audi R8 has proved to be a huge success for the German manufacturer and replacing it is no mean feat. Audi hopes to improve on the R8s success but adding more power, decreasing weight and incorporating a radical new design.

When first launched in 2006 the only real change the R8 has seen since then was a recent facelift last year. The biggest change was the removal of the cars only real Achilles heel its R tronic gearbox which was replaced by a slickshifting S tronic transmission.

The new R8, which Audi plans to unveil in 2015, will stay true to the current concept, maintaining the cars proportions and interior space. However it will undergo more dramatic cosmetic changes. Neat new design features will include a more prominent singleframe grille that will eventually grace all Audis RSbadged models and there will also be new matrixbeam LED lights with an updated daytime running light design. A shorter version of the cars trademark sideblade is also expected.

Audi isnt expected to follow rival manufactures such as Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren down the hybrid supercar route, however. Instead, the R8 will be fitted with a revised version of the current V8 and V10, with power hikes of around 25bhp for both, taking them to 450bhp and 570bhp respectively. For the first time on the R8, all engines will get cylinder deactivation and stopstart technology. Expect a 10 per cent improvement in fuel economy

Audi will use lessons learned from its R8 LMS racer, adding a carbon fibrereinforced plastic CFRP bonnet and roof to save weight, while a version of the downforcegenerating double diffuser used on the LMP1 Le Mans winner is expected, too. The car will also draw on the R8 etron adopting its Multimaterial Spaceframe body, which uses 23 per cent carbon fibre in its construction to save 23kg. Also likely to be included are the etrons glass fibrereinforced polymer suspension springs, CFRP antiroll bars, ceramic brakes and titanium rear wheel hubs. All this will help keep the weight below 1,500kg.

However, carbon fibre isnt just for body panel and interior trim; it will form 23 per cent of the R8s chassis, resulting in a stiffer body. Groundbreaking suspension will see glass fibrereinforced polymer coils save weight without compromising performance.

The interior will benefit from a thorough overhaul, with most functions incorporated into a new MMI system. Digital dials are also likely, as is a digital rearview mirror that uses a hires camera to produce an image on a screen.

The new R8 V8 is expected to cost from just under 100,000.

New Audi R8 details explained

Bold grille

Speaking to Auto Express at the Detroit Motor Show back in January, quattro division boss Franciscus van Meel confirmed the striking grille you see here will feature on future RS cars.

Audi is keen to transfer tech directly from the race track to the road. As a result, the carbon fibre bonnet from the R8 LMS will be used, as well as a highdownforce doublediffuser.

If you thought suspension springs had to be made of metal, think again. Groundbreaking glass fibrereinforced polymer coils help save weight without compromising performance.

Carbon fibre isnt just for body panel and interior trim; it will form a key part 23 per cent of the R8s chassis in varying thicknesses and make the body four times stiffer.

Both V8 and V10 will get a major efficiency boost with the addition of stopstart and cylinder deactivation, which cuts half the cylinders under light throttle loads.
