Robert Maxwell

A native of Canada, Robert attended the Carleton University School of Journalism in his hometown of Ottawa, Ontario. The program involved four years of intense training and internships at venues like Parliament Hill that led directly to his first radio job.

While working in radio news in Montreal, Quebec a friend told Robert about a job opportunity at the Weather Network, Canadas answer to The Weather Channel. When he showed up for what he thought was an audition for a national radio gig, Robert found himself in front of a TV camera and green screen and loved every minute of it. He was soon hired as a Regional Weather Specialist at The Weather Networks popular Toronto morning show.

But telling news stories remains Roberts true passion. That drive has led to exciting television reporting and anchoring roles in Toronto and at the ABC affiliates in Orlando, Florida and Salt Lake City, Utah. Robert broke a number of significant stories including one that led to reforms in how law enforcement is trained in applying state concealandcarry laws. Another dealt with public employees generating fake documents at a Driver License Division office. During his free time, Robert enjoys exploring Austins everexpanding list of restaurants, music venues, wineries and the winding roads of the Hill Country.

Canadas manufacturing sector expanded more modestly in June

TORONTO Canadas manufacturing sector continued to expand in June, although at a more modest pace than the previous month, according to an index of Canadian manufacturing intentions.

The RBC purchasing managers index dipped to 52.4 in June from 53.2 in May. However, the monthly reading by the Royal Bank TSX:RY, conducted in association with Markit, remained above 50, which means the manufacturing sector continued to expand.

The survey found that manufacturers hired new workers in June as they received a higher volume of new orders, but that increased costs put pressure on profit margins.

The index fell below 50.0 in March for the first time since the survey was created 2 1/2 years ago.

Since then its been steadily improving, with May recording the strongest growth as intentions rose to an 11month high.

Canadas manufacturing sector continued to expand in June a sign that the slowdown earlier this year was, in fact, a temporary blip, RBC chief economist Craig Wright said in a statement.

Moving into the second half of 2013, an anticipated strengthening in international demand will help the sector shake off its relatively lacklustre performance it has recorded over the past year, Wright said.

are when Best Buy employees worry about getting laid off

SEE ALSO: Best Buy ends workfromhome programBest Buys February announcement that itd be laying off 400 employees didnt mean the remaining employees were in the clear, as throughout the year, smaller groups of employees have been getting laid off typically on Tuesdays. In fact, according to a Star Tribune report, employees have taken to calling Tuesdays Tornado Tuesdays or Termination Tuesdays.Whenever someone leaves their desk, we think that person just got laid off, when he or she might just be going to the bathroom, one unnamed employee told the Strib. As part of the restructuring taking place in the wake of the disaster that was former CEO Brian Dunns tenure, the company announced plans to cut $700 million in costs. According to the Strib, execs have so far trimmed about $300 million, with that number growing as the company lays off employees in groups ranging from single digits to up to 25.While Termination Tuesdays makes Best Buy a more stressful place to work and certainly doesnt boost employee morale, one of the benefits of laying off employees in small groups is that it allows Best Buy to avoid the negative publicity companies receive when they lay off hundreds of workers at once.Last month, Time, citing Best Buys impressive stock performance this year, proclaimed that the company is back from the dead. Thats good news for investors and execs, but not necessarily for the corporate rankandfile especially on Tuesdays.

Canna Lily Sales Face A Chaotic Future

Many agricultural plants that are reproduced by vegetative division face a mysterious problem that results in a decline in the clone vigor, and most farmers and nurserymen claim that the plant crop has run out. A number of factors adversely affect the plant clone to the point that it becomes unproductive and uneconomical to continue growing.

A technique has been discovered that has revitalized the agricultural crops such as strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, sweet potato, banana, and a newcomer: the canna lily. This flower bulb or rhizome is facing present and future disastrous consequences unless governmental regulatory steps are taken to correct the dilemma facing the canna lily industry. Since the 1940s, canna lily rhizomes have been continuously commercially grown from the original stock that could easily be harvested in the fall, packaged and resold by Dutch mailorder companies few exist today, most went bankrupt as named varieties. Commerce developed so extensively around the success of selling millions of these rhizomes that some farmers began to cultivate canna lilies in fields, planted in rows like corn, exclusively for the Dutch mailorder companies. For some canna growers in the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, the financial rewards were so excessive, that they began to plant hundreds of acres as an exclusive agricultural crop. Because of a shift in business retailers a decade ago, when the canna lily sales were shifted away from packaged rhizomes of mailorder companies to the potted, growing, blooming canna lilies for spring and summer sales by boxstores such as Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot. The boxstores bought their potted products mainly from contracted nursery growers, purchased as dormant, canna lily rhizomes from the exclusive field grown canna farmers who originally supplied the mailorder companies just a decade ago. This dramatic change from selling dormant canna lily bulbs to trusting mailorder customers to the customers at box stores, who observed the plant flowers and leaves before purchasing, has made it necessary for box stores to reject many of the inferior potted canna lilies, that had over the years declined run out to a state of unpredictability. This rejection had not occurred to mailorder customers who were buying an unseen, untested rhizome with a wish that it grow into that beautifullypictured dormant plant that was packaged for sale in the mailorder catalog.

Growing canna lilies for retail sale has now become a crisis much like the one that threatened the growers of strawberry plants, raspberry bushes, blackberry bushes, and banana trees years ago.

The canna commercial growers proceeded each year to set aside part of the current canna rhizome crop to use as seed for renewal planting the following season. As growing continued each year, certain genetic defects and susceptibilities began to appear and accumulate and grow more seriously each year. The canna farms continued regrowing and selling more and more diseased and mutated canna rhizomes each year, until they can be viewed with horror in full bloom and the distorted flowers and ratty leaves by the contrast the buyers at the stores and the retail customers. Many of these canna varieties were originally grown and sold as true to name varieties. After many decades of vegetative reproduction, the canna crop has become a mixture of harmful and inferior mutations susceptible to many diseases, insects, nematodes, and flower abnormalities. Commercial growers of cannas practiced a technique that they called roguing that involved searching through rows of cannas in full bloom and discarding those that appeared to vary visually from the desired variety intended to be grown. This technique only worked partially, because many of the weaknesses and inferior qualities could not be visually determined, such as canna rhizomes that failed to bloom at the time the farmer decided to rogue the canna fields. Additionally, the genetic factors that were mutated into the rhizomes that made the plant susceptible to diseases and other impediments would not be seen, since the commercial fields were normally sprayed effectively to remove pests; however, the normal home gardener does not expect to buy a plant that must be continuously sprayed with fungicides, nematode treatments, or for insects, and as soon as their potted plants are placed in the home garden, the leaves are exposed to the assaults of the leaf rollers, and the webworms, and the rhizomes become infested with the ravages of the nematodes. This disenchantment of retail buyers and admirers of cannas is expected to drastically curb the future purchases of canna lilies.

Plant decline in such agricultural products as strawberry plants, raspberry plants, blackberry plants, sweet potato vines, and banana trees has been approached and largely overcome by the process of tissue culture. Plant scientists have discovered that the rapidly growing tip of a plant called the apical meristem, can be removed and placed into a tissue growing medium. The plants from which the apical meristems are removed are carefully selected to reproduce and must conform to the original desirable characteristics of the parent cultivar. The apical meristem grows so rapidly that by carefully selecting the few cells at the tip, virus and other mutation problems are left behind to result in a new plant that is vigorous, diseasefree, and fast growing.

This group of cells grows into a complete plant with a shoot and root system intact, that are collectively called nuclear stock mother plants. These mother plants are used to divide vegetatively from which commercial, private sector nurseries are permitted to sell certified plants to farmers that are free of virus, bacteria, and other diseases.

As of August 1, 2006, no suggestion has been made to restore the canna growing industry from its present chaotic disposition by the use of tissue culture technique. Tissue culture could restore the reputation of marketing and production of canna lily rhizomes to a satisfactory acceptance level of approval by both wholesale and retail customers.

Many agricultural plants that are reproduced by vegetative division face a mysterious problem that results in a decline in the clone vigor, and most farmers and nurserymen claim that the plant crop has run out. A number of factors adversely affect the plant clone to the point that it becomes unproductive and uneconomical to continue growing.

risk sex offender released after 22

A highrisk sex offender who served a 22year sentence for sexually assaulting an Abbotsford museum worker in 1991 has been released from prison and is now living in Surrey. Corrections Branch issued the warning this week about Raymond Lee Caissie, 42.

Caissie pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault with a weapon, one count of robbery and one count of unlawful confinement in relation to the incident that occurred on July 21, 1991.

On that day, he entered Trethewey House the home of the MSA Museum Society on Ware Street, and came across a lone 21yearold female student who was working there for the summer.

He threatened her with a knife, forced her to strip, and then twice sexually assaulted her.

Caissie then drove with the woman until they came to the south end of Gladwin Road, where he took her to a secluded wooded area on the American side of the border.

He forced her to perform a sex act, tied her to a tree, and left.

Two days later, he grabbed a purse from another woman before being picked up by police. He was convicted of robbery for that incident.

His criminal history also includes theft, break and enter, and possession of stolen property.

Caissie was released from prison after completing his full sentence.

He is currently on bail supervision, and is considered by Corrections as a highrisk offender who has a varied pattern of crime, having offended violently and sexually in an opportunistic and impulsive manner.

Surrey Mayor Diane Watts is outraged that another highrisk sex offender has been located in that city.

At least two other suspects sought in Bosma murder investigation

An investigation has now revealed Tim Bosma has been murdered. His body was burned beyond recognition, Det.Sgt. Matt Kavanagh said during the afternoon news conference.

Kavanagh wouldnt say how police were able to confirm the identity of the remains, saying thats part of the evidence. He said from the evidence police had gathered, he believes Bosma died the night he left his home.

Kavanagh said they were able to retrieve video surveillance which shows a second vehicle followed the three men in the truck as it left the residence.

Police are still trying to confirm the type of vehicle it was and how many suspects may have been in that second car.

Kavanagh said about 120 police officers are working diligently on the case, executing a number of search warrants in their quest for clues on the identity of the suspects and a possible motive in the case.

At this point, although investigators believe Bosma was targeted by the men, they are still unclear of the suspects reason for the attack.

Bosma had no criminal record and there is nothing to indicate he was anything other than a loving family man who attended church regularly.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Bosmas wife Sharlene and the entire Bosma family as they mourn their loss, Hamilton Police Chief Glenn De Caire told reporters Tuesday morning. We will continue to follow every single lead and we will work to affect the arrest of those responsible for the death of Tim Bosma.

Peter Lowe, a high school friend of Bosma who created an official page on Facebook to help spread public awareness on his friends disappearance posted a message of grief on the social media site.

The agony in this house is indescribable, he wrote Tuesday morning. There will be no further updates on this page. My prayers are with this wonderful family.

Bosmas friends and family have spent the week gathered inside and outside the home, handing out flyers to the community pleading anyone with information to call police with tips.

Bosmas wife sobbed as she read out a statement to reporters late last week when she begged those responsible to let her husband go.

Its just a truck. You dont need him but I do and our daughter needs her daddy back so please, please let him come home, she said Thursday.

Police also searched the Kleinburg home of Millards mother on Sunday, seizing Bosmas truck.

Kavanagh dismissed speculation that the suspects mother was involved in the crime.

She has no involvement or knowledge of this case, he said.

Forensic investigators have also been seen searching for evidence at a Waterloo air hangar owned by Millards family. We cannot discuss all the evidence given the ongoing criminal process.

Suspect has ties to aviation industry

Millard, the 27yearold CEO of Millard Air, has already been charged with forcible confinement and theft over $5,000 in connection with the disappearance of Bosma.

Both police and Millards lawyer confirm the suspect did not have a criminal record prior to these charges.

Speaking with reporters Monday, Millards lawyer Deepak Paradkar said his client is 100 per cent not guilty.

He is a very balanced young man, very humble, I had no idea who he was before this case, Paradkar said. We are concerned what the evidence is against him, we dont know.

Police have only released the description of one of the suspects still wanted in the case. This man was decribed by both Bosmas wife and an Etobicoke man who was also reportedly approached by the suspects when he listed his Dodge Ram 3500 for sale. Kavanagh said last week that he believes the Etobicoke man wasnt attacked because his large size would have made it difficult for the suspects to overpower him.

The suspect was described as being white with a medium build. He is around fivefootnine with dark hair. He was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt that was pulled over his head.
