Christmas Lights Across Canada

Capital cities throughout the country are brought together by the annual celebration of Christmas Lights Across Canada.

In Canadas Capital, the winter landscape glows with hundreds of thousands of multicoloured lights during the holiday season. The festivities begin with an illumination ceremony in early December and continue until early January. Throughout Christmas Lights Across Canada, the lights in OttawaGatineau glow each evening from 4:30 pm to 2 am.

About Christmas Lights Across Canada

The Christmas Lights program was launched in 1985 to brighten the Ottawa winter. At first, the lights were only on Parliament Hill, but over the years the program expanded. Now, Ottawa and Gatineau glow each winter with Christmas lights at over 60 sites along Confederation Boulevard.

The program also grew to include our 13 provincial and territorial capitals, becoming Christmas Lights Across Canada. Throughout the country, Canadians come together each year to brighten their wintery capitals with thousands of holiday lights.

Cape Breton Post

The event took place at John Bernard Croak VC Royal Canadian Legion branch 3 to honour people who served in the conflict. Wreaths were laid for each of the 12 Cape Bretoners who died in the war.

All I can say, war is hell, said Archbishop Vincent Waterman, who served in the conflict and who acts now as chaplain of branch 28 and the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association.

And I hope and pray we never see another one. When you look at the devastation it causes, the people hurt, soldiers coming back maimed, its not easy. When you were visiting the hospitals and homes, it would tear your heart out. These men here gave everything they had God bless Canada. It is the land of the free and home also of those who were brave and willing to keep it that way.

One man who will never forget is George Aucoin. The Margaree native was a gunner and went over to Korea twice.

Its the forgotten war, he said. It was a war they were firing real bullets and it was a real war but they didnt give us credit until 1992.

Aucoin said events like the one held Saturday are important but hed also like to see the association for Korean War veterans reactivated.

Id like to see the association start again. Theres still some people around here who remember Korea 12 Cape Bretoners were killed there during war and theres a monument on waterfront. Nobody gets there anymore its very sad.

Arlene Kelly attended Saturdays service on behalf of her father, Joe Wilson, who was one of 10 people from across Canada selected to go to South Korea to attend special services for Korean War veterans from Canada.

He always wanted to go back but never thought he could afford it, said Kelly, her voice cracking with emotion. So for him to go back and see the changes in the country, its been amazing for me to watch him but I cant even imagine whats hes going through right now.

Theres no word to describe this he didnt sleep for two nights. Theres not much that makes a 79yearold man excited these days but he was so excited about going and he wanted to see the changes over there.

Carjacking victim says Christopher Dorner was calm

There was no question.

PHOTOS: Christopher DornerTeams of officers who had sought the fugitive exLos Angeles police officer since last week were closing in. Dorner pointed the gun at Heltebrake and ordered him to get out of his truck.I dont want to hurt you. He wasnt wildeyed, just almost professional, he said. He was on a mission. It was clear I wasnt part of his agenda and there were other people down the road that were part of his agenda, he said. Andrew Neiman said the agency had returned to normal patrol operations but about a dozen of the targets would continue to be protected until the remains are positively identified. Patrick Foy with the California Fish and Wildlife Department, which aided the search, said two housekeepers surprised Dorner in the cabin when they came to clean it Tuesday morning.

It was horrifying to listen to that firefight and to hear those words. 6 after they connected the Feb. Randal Quan for providing poor representation before a police disciplinary board that fired him for filing a false report. You have awoken a sleeping giant.

Parents: Facebook is not in the business of raising my child, nor should you expect Facebook to raise yours.

It is not the responsibility of Twitter to make sure my child behaves well online it is my responsibility to make sure my child behaves in any environment. If we want major change, it will not come from laws or banning people from websites; it will come from parents, communities, and schools to engage in dialogue and education to raise children who have an understanding of digital citizenship and accountability for their online and offline actions, because accountability and respect still matter.

Im in London for the first international edition of our Third Metric conference, discussing a more sustainable definition of success that includes wellbeing, wisdom, and our ability to wonder and to give back. Thats why well be holding more events like the one today so people can connect, learn from each other, exchange ideas and truly begin to ingrain healthier habits and restructure the way we live our daily lives. Our unsustainable definition of success is a global problem, and its going to require a global response. I hope youll join the conversation and tell us how youre redefining success in your own life and in your part of the world.

Christ was born at a different time

According to the Westar Religious Institute in America, it was a monk from Russia called Dionysius Exiguus who was asked by Pope John to work out the dates for Easter. when Dionysius formalized the date of Jesus birth as December 25 on the Christian calendar. The current head of the Catholic Church Pope Benedict writes in his new book called of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives that Dionysius got it wrong. He says the calculation of the beginning of the calendar based on the birth of Jesus was made by Dionysius Exiguus, who made a mistake on his calculations by several years. Professor of Classics, Nature and History at Warwick University, Kevin Butcher says the idea that Jesus wasn born on December 25 is nothing new. Churchmen in the 17th century had also challenged the date before.

This discrepancy has been known about for many centuries, in fact. In the 17th century it became quite apparent that the calculations by Dionysius Exiguus were incorrect. The dating basically rests on the New Testament. Birth of Jesus occurs during the reign of King Herod the Great. Trying to reconcile the various discrepancies is quite difficult anyway, whether this is particularly important to an article of faith I don know, I don think so.

There were plenty of other dating systems in use. This is one of the reasons why it was so hard for Dionysius to figure out the date, in the first place. There are lots of competing dating systems. And trying to create some kind of universal one is very hard, if you working with lots of other dating systems.

Caroline Farrow is from the Catholic Voice and says most religious people know that the day recognized as Christmas Day and Jesus birthday is, in fact, wrong.

The Pope isn really saying anything new. I think the media is just trying to find a bit of a negative story.

It not only the issue of data of Christ birthday that the Pope has raised in his book. He also dispels the myth of the nativity set. According to in Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives there were no ox, no little donkey or other animals at Jesus birth. Caroline Farrow is from the Catholic Voice says people shouldn focus on what just surrounds the nativity set.

This is his own personal interpretation and he looking in a way in which Luke and Matthew have interpreted historical facts. Caroline Farrow thinks the Pope is setting people a challenge to view Christmas differently. But the Pope does say in his book that no one will give up the ox or the little donkey in their scenes. We asked Christmas shoppers if not having the little donkey next to babyJesus on a bed of straw changes the way they celebrate Christmas.

Not really. I celebrate it anyway. I believe in God.

That doesn really affect me. I not particularly religious anyway. To me Christmas is about something else. It about seeing people, giving presents, general good will. I celebrate it not because some baby was born one day or the other day 2000 years ago.

The Book of Nazareth: Infancy Narratives traces Christ early life until the age of 12 and is published around the world in 9 different languages.

For many people of the world the Bradley Manning case seems absurd and his persecution by the US Government something difficult to comprehend. He was something that the US government is afraid of, he was a soldier with a conscience who exposed war crimes being committed by US forces. The way the US has turned logic upside down by going after one who exposed crimes while protecting those who commit crimes should have the world up in arms. Only an illegal and illegitimate government would protect criminals while persecuting and even torturing a moral and upstanding brave individual who had the courage to stand up and blow the whistle on what he saw, rather than being rewarded and seen as a hero. Those protecting the criminals have decided to make Mr. Manning an example in order to throw fear into the hearts of anyone who would dare to expose their illegality.

The Children Rights Commissioner for the Russian President, Pavel Astakhov, asked the Federal Migration Service head to grant asylum for a daughter of a Russian woman who has escaped from her husband in Norway. The girl can be granted asylum in Russia as a minor needing protection, a lawyer, Roman Stepanov, said to the Voice of Russia. The girl and her mother are currently staying in transit zone of Moscow Sheremetyevo airport in much the same way as exCIA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden had for three weeks.

Fonterra, the world leading exporter of dairy products, is recalling a number of its milk products after a food poisoning scare. China, which is the major importer of milk powder from New Zealand was the first country to impose bans on Fonterra products. The Chinese decision was supported by Russia that has also put Fonterra deliveries on hold. Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare is now investigating whether contaminated products from New Zealand were imported to the markets. Professor of economy at the New School University Max Fraad Wolff talked with the Voice of Russia about the impact of Fronterraban on New Zealands market.

Keeping a killer dog in Britain may become a risky business. The government has come up with new sentencing proposals for dog owners whose pets attack people in public venues. The options for the owner of a dog which injures a person or an assistance dog could range from a tenyear prison terms to a life behind bars. At present, the maximum sentence is two years in jail. Mr Dave Joyce, the National Health, Safety Environment Officer at The Communication Workers Union, talked with the Voice of Russia about the new policy.
