Center for Employment Training in San Bernardino offers career training

When he got out of prison determined to clean up his life, he ended up working at a warehouse job that barely paid a living wage. Finally, early this year, the 30yearold Redlands resident made his way to the Center for Employment Training in San Bernardino, where he is now training to be a welder. For much of my life I was running amok, so when I got out of prison I told myself I want to find work where I am not living paycheck to Welding student Emilio Salcedo, 21, of Colton, left, watches as Ramiro Torres, 29, of San Bernardino practices overhead arc welding at the Center for Employment Training in San Bernardino. The center has seen a jump in enrollment since the economic decline. Al Cuizon / Staff Photographerpaycheck, he said. Now I have learned a trade. I know how to weld. The center, a postsecondary school that recently moved from Riverside to a building on Cooley Court in San Bernardino, trains students, ages 18 to 80, in labor demand occupations.Among the occupations students train for are heating, ventilation and air conditioning maintenance, computer programming and design, welding, accounting and bookkeeping. All of the teachers have reallife experience in different industries so they can provide handson training.Because students come from diverse backgrounds, they Advertisementreceive lessons in life skills along with the vocational training. The goal is to enter the program, get trained and go back to work as soon as possible, said John Castro, recruiter/job developer for the center. With the economic downturn, the bustling center is seeing an increase in students.Among the 120 now attending the school are limited English speakers, injured workers, former prisoners, recently laid off middleaged workers and retirees seeking a new line of work. What we find is our student population has overcome a lot of adversity and they are here because they are dedicated to finding a good job with a good wage, said Castro. On a recent weekday morning, instructor Marvin Blanco provided instruction to students in reading blueprints and different techniques used in the welding trade. Not far away, 29yearold Ramiro Torres of San Bernardino demonstrated overhead arc welding to Emilio Salcedo, 19, of Colton.I had no place to stay, no car and no family to help me when I found this place while I was riding my bike, said Torres, as sparks flew overhead. Now I ride my bike here five days a week because I am determined to get a good job.I never had the chance to learn welding before, but now that Im retired Im doing it, he said. I feel lucky that I found this school..

Regulators approve use of artificial heart

Federal regulators yesterday approved the use of an artificial heart, marking the first time a mechanical device has been made widely available to replace a failing human organ.

In contrast, with early hopes of permanently replacing an ailing heart with a manmade pump, the new device substitutes for the bottom half of the heart and can be used only to sustain critically ill patients in the hospital until they can get a heart transplant.

But the CardioWest Total Artificial Heart offers hope to the dozens of Americans who would otherwise die each year without it, and its approval by the Food and Drug Administration was hailed as an important, longsought moment.

However, critics questioned the value of the $100,000 device, saying it will only add expense to the nations already bloated healthcare bill without increasing the number of heart patients who survive.

The number of lives you save with heart transplants is limited by the number of hearts that are available. And this does nothing about that, said medical ethicist George Annas of Boston University. Dozens were injured, none critically.

The bus was en route from Chicago to Holly Springs, Miss., with 48 people Sunday night when it struck a guardrail on Interstate 57, slid nearly 70 feet down an embankment and landed on its side, said Robert Ventura, a state police official.

The driver, Albert Miller, 68, of Rossville, Tenn., was cited for improper lane usage.

Thirtyseven people, including the bus driver, were treated at hospitals and released, State Police Master Sgt. Barry Stricklin said yesterday. Stricklin said six other passengers, including two children, were hospitalized. The most seriously injured was a 6yearold girl who suffered a broken pelvis.

Escalades, Maximas seen as likely targets

The Cadillac Escalade EXT, a $53,000 chrometrimmed luxury pickup with leather bucket seats, a sevenspeaker stereo system with satellite radio and a global tracking system, is the vehicle most targeted by thieves, a study by the insurance industry has found.

Its the second year in a row that an Escalade has been at the top of the list, which was released today by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Escalade sportutility vehicle topped last years list; this year, that SUV is third.

Review of Rustic Inn Creekside Resort and Spa at Jackson Hole

My husband planned a fabulous trip to Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. One of the highlights of our trip was the 4 wonderful nights at the Rustic Inn. Our private cabin was spacious and had a spa like showering/dressing area. We faced the creek which was lovely. The included breakfast was delicious and fresh. Starbucks coffee and fruit infused water was available 24 hrs a day. The service was great, most notably, a big thank you to Brittany at the front desk. She welcomed us and provided great information on restaurants and local activities. She is a great asset to the Rustic Inn. Shopping and restaurants were walkable. One of the most beautiful properties we stayed at.

We stayed at the Rustic Inn in Jackson as part of a 13night Globus bus tour from Rapid City to Las Vegas. This was only one of two locations where we stayed for two nights instead of one, and from my perspective, Globus couldnt have picked a better place to stay during the midpoint of our fortnight on the road. Oh and the two beds were queensized and quite high off the floor. The setting may have been rustic, but the feel was at least in comparison to most of the standard accommodations we had been used to quite luxurious. The breakfast bufffet was among the best we encountered during the trip. A creek ran at the back of the property and the complex included a gazebo fitness room and separate laundry facility. Theres a shuttle into town, although its only a few blocks walk to the town square, and the main part of central Jackson is only a few blocks square, so getting around on foot is not difficult at all, even for older folks who dont have mobility issues.

We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and found both the accommodations and staff to your liking. We were a little disappointed to find that you felt our breakfast selection lacks options as we do try to offer a breakfast to be enjoyed by all as you know but to share with others some of the variety includes a hot buffet of eggs, bacon, sausage, and potatoes. In addition we offer plenty of fresh fruit, yogurt, and homemade granola. Besides the granola we bake our own muffins and pastries daily. For those that might be on the go we do provide bagels and cream cheese. Drink selections include several juices, hot cocoa, Tazo Teas and Starbucks coffee. For anyone that prefers a sit down menu based breakfast we like to suggest a locals favorite the Bunnery. Its a short walk from the property or we can take you there via the property shuttle.

Free airport shuttle 7am 11pm requires 24 hour advance booking, complimentary hot gourmet breakfast buffet, heated outdoor pool, outdoor Jacuzzi, sauna, spa treatment rooms, gym, seasonal fishing for children age 17 and under, lounge seasonal patio featuring Mediterraneaninspired cuisine, wine cellar, room service, double pillowtop mattresses, fine linens, complimentary WiFi Internet access, surround sound and spa.

Audi R8 2014 pictures

The Audi R8 has proved to be a huge success for the German manufacturer and replacing it is no mean feat. Audi hopes to improve on the R8s success but adding more power, decreasing weight and incorporating a radical new design.

When first launched in 2006 the only real change the R8 has seen since then was a recent facelift last year. The biggest change was the removal of the cars only real Achilles heel its R tronic gearbox which was replaced by a slickshifting S tronic transmission.

The new R8, which Audi plans to unveil in 2015, will stay true to the current concept, maintaining the cars proportions and interior space. However it will undergo more dramatic cosmetic changes. Neat new design features will include a more prominent singleframe grille that will eventually grace all Audis RSbadged models and there will also be new matrixbeam LED lights with an updated daytime running light design. A shorter version of the cars trademark sideblade is also expected.

Audi isnt expected to follow rival manufactures such as Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren down the hybrid supercar route, however. Instead, the R8 will be fitted with a revised version of the current V8 and V10, with power hikes of around 25bhp for both, taking them to 450bhp and 570bhp respectively. For the first time on the R8, all engines will get cylinder deactivation and stopstart technology. Expect a 10 per cent improvement in fuel economy

Audi will use lessons learned from its R8 LMS racer, adding a carbon fibrereinforced plastic CFRP bonnet and roof to save weight, while a version of the downforcegenerating double diffuser used on the LMP1 Le Mans winner is expected, too. The car will also draw on the R8 etron adopting its Multimaterial Spaceframe body, which uses 23 per cent carbon fibre in its construction to save 23kg. Also likely to be included are the etrons glass fibrereinforced polymer suspension springs, CFRP antiroll bars, ceramic brakes and titanium rear wheel hubs. All this will help keep the weight below 1,500kg.

However, carbon fibre isnt just for body panel and interior trim; it will form 23 per cent of the R8s chassis, resulting in a stiffer body. Groundbreaking suspension will see glass fibrereinforced polymer coils save weight without compromising performance.

The interior will benefit from a thorough overhaul, with most functions incorporated into a new MMI system. Digital dials are also likely, as is a digital rearview mirror that uses a hires camera to produce an image on a screen.

The new R8 V8 is expected to cost from just under 100,000.

New Audi R8 details explained

Bold grille

Speaking to Auto Express at the Detroit Motor Show back in January, quattro division boss Franciscus van Meel confirmed the striking grille you see here will feature on future RS cars.

Audi is keen to transfer tech directly from the race track to the road. As a result, the carbon fibre bonnet from the R8 LMS will be used, as well as a highdownforce doublediffuser.

If you thought suspension springs had to be made of metal, think again. Groundbreaking glass fibrereinforced polymer coils help save weight without compromising performance.

Carbon fibre isnt just for body panel and interior trim; it will form a key part 23 per cent of the R8s chassis in varying thicknesses and make the body four times stiffer.

Both V8 and V10 will get a major efficiency boost with the addition of stopstart and cylinder deactivation, which cuts half the cylinders under light throttle loads.
