Campers Pack Thousands of Meals for Children
Summer camp for some local junior and senior high schoolers goes beyond songs and smores. It means saving lives.
It began with a fundraiser by campers, students and communities all across the country. On Wednesday, more than $50,000 later, the end result sent food to children who otherwise may not have a chance.
It was designed specifically to feed children in countries where their nourishment may not be where it needs to be, said Go! Camp director, Brad Montague.
Nearly 400 Go! campers, family and area church members scooped, poured and packaged the meals.
When we started this and everyones at the tables and everythings happening I was like this is the moment we wanted to have happen, said Montague.
A few hours of fun meant turning hunger into hope.
Wherever this food lands, were going to know exactly where it is and were going to be able to coordinate with people who distribute it to make sure theyre not only fed physically, but fed in their lives in so many other ways, said Montague.
Each bag contains enough food for one child for a week. Campers and volunteers made enough bags to feed 400 children everyday for one year that is 140,000 meals all together.
I think its just great because its something so simple that we can do and it can be done really fast and it saves a lot of lives, said camper Sarah Foy.
These young people, God has melted their hearts and shown them what they can do as far as a unit together, said camper Miguel Ortiz.
Go! Camps goal is to change the lives of hungry children, as well as those who learn to help.
Theres something about the passion of young people, and this optimism that they have, said Montague. I think if we can put in front of them needs and teach them compassion early itll be something they live out all the time.
