Family friends say the 3yearold boy and his 11month old brother neither of whom has been identified yet were killed in the crash on Lower Harmony Road. The 11monthold would have celebrated his first birthday on Friday, and the family had been planning a party.
Police said the road was covered with a thin layer of ice when the driver lost control of her SUV going downhill. The vehicle darted across the road, hit an embankment, started to roll and crashed into a tree. SLIDESHOW: Photos from the crash scene
County residents told WTAE reporter Sheldon Ingram that they were saddened to hear that two children died, but not surprised that such an accident had occurred.
Its horrible. I cant even imagine being a mother and losing your child, Julie Codispot said.
The roads were terrible. They were all glossy, and it was like a sheet of ice, Tracey Fennell said.
It was like a glare. Everybody says black ice. I just traveled along the edge to catch the gravel because I knew I couldnt put the brakes on, Michael Fennell said.
Callers to WTAEs viewer hotline reported other accidents, including a collision on Route 19 between Portersville and Zelienople, and a tractortrailer that went off Route 422 between routes 8 and 68.
PennDOT said Route 422 East in Summit Township was closed in both directions from Heist Road to Carbon Center Road because of a crash, and there were several other crashes within the 422 corridor.
