camera ball takes perfect panorama photos

Jonas Pfeil, a student from the Technical University of Berlin has created a rugged, grapefruitsized ball that has 36 fixedfocus, 2megapixel digital camera sensors built in. The user simply throws the ball into the air and photos are simultaneously taken with all 36 cameras to create a full, spherical 360degree? panorama of the surrounding scene.

The basic premise for the project is that taking panoramic images using a conventional still camera is a bore: you either need special hardware and software, like the GigaPan system, or you have to painstakingly shoot the photos and arrange them yourself when you get back home. The Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera it doesn seem to have a nickname automatically takes 36 photos when it at the highest point of its trajectory, and it comes with a panoramic image viewer that displays the images as a pannable, zoomable sphere that you can move around; a lot like Google Street View.

The ball itself is made with a 3D printer, and the innards which include 36 STM VS6724 CMOS camera sensors, an accelerometer, and microcontrollers to control the cameras are adequately padded, so presumably it doesn matter if you suck at throwing and catching. You can see from the video below that the ball is too big but not too heavy for singlehanded use but considering this is the work of a master degree student, it safe to assume that the same hardware could be miniaturized into something like a tennis ball. It seems like every camera has independent exposure control, too, which in this case isn necessarily a good thing; notice how some fragments of the panoramas are different colors.

Still, the Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera which will be demonstrated at in December is an utterly fantastic idea and you can imagine how it could revolutionize everything from holiday snaps, to wedding photos, to playful photos of children at play. There also the added bonus that if you alone, the photo will always have your grinning, supplicating mug at the bottom and if you ever traveled alone, you know how hard it can be to take a good selfportrait in a busy location. Imagine what it would be like if you combined the panoramic ball with the Israeli launcher hostileenvironment camera system, too no word on when the ball might come to market, but the first words on the project website are PENDING, so presumably Jonas at least has the intention of licensing the design. Excitingly, the ball components are very cheap; it could have a retail price of under $100.

Rides Back Into N

Jesse James, the tattooed founder of West Coast Choppers, has won fame, money and movie star girlfriends by selling an outlaw bikerwithablowtorch image to the cubiclebound masses.

Mainstream folk know him as the star of the Discovery Channel series Monster Garage, a car makeover show in which James and company transform normal vehicles into bizarre fantasy machines. cities.

A West Coast Chopper is the bike you will buy when you win the lottery or your stock options are worth something. Until then, you will have to settle for a West Coast Chopper Tshirt or a copy of James new book, I Am Jesse James, which he will be signing Wednesday right here in Albuquerque.

Yes, you read that correctly. Jesse James will be in Albuquerque.

The city is one of just five on his tiny booksigning tour, and the smallest metropolis on the schedule. Why us?

Because Lindsay Lancaster, intrepid promotions director for the tiny North Valley store Bookworks, badgered James publisher relentlessly about him coming here. And because Albuquerque, James says, was a logical stop for a bluecollar man of the people like himself.

As proof of his regularguy status, James points to his clothes. I have on shoes and a shirt from WalMart right now, the 34yearold says.

Hes calling from Las Vegas, Nev., where he was doing voiceovers for a video game with skateboard god Tony Hawk.

James goes on to extol WalMarts low prices as populism in action, which will surprise all of those who see the mega discount store as the epitome of culturecrushing capitalism.

Theres an obvious contradiction here.

James bikes sell for between $80,000 and $150,000 each, and they sit beneath the butts of people who make more money in a minute than the average WalMart shopper makes in a month. Keanu Reeves has a West Coast Chopper; so do Kid Rock, Shaquille ONeal and James current girlfriend Sandra Bullock.

These are hardly the sort of folks who feed their dogs Ol Roy.

But James says the luxochoppers are only a tiny part of his empire. His shop in Long Beach, Calif., produces just 20 bikes a year which he says is hardly enough to pay the bills.

If all I did was build my bikes, I would have been out of business years ago, he says. Bikes are way too labor intensive.

The bulk of West Coast Choppers income, he says, comes from the motorcycle parts and custom kits his company makes. And those Tshirts.

All of which, James says, are in the financial reach of his beloved Regular People.

Any plans to make a West Coast Chopper bike for the WalMart crowd? Yeah, were going to put a lawnmower engine in it, he cracks. Wednesday.

You can buy a book in advance at Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande NW. It will come with a numbered bookmark assigning you a place in line at the event.

Just so you know, James is not happy about the appearance at the Harley dealership.

Im antiestablishment. In my world, the Harley dealer and the Harley factory is establishment, he says. HarleyDavidsons demographic is 45yearold guys who can buy their bike with a credit card swipe.

James will speak and then sign copies of his book, a glossy coffee table tome which features photos of his bikes, buxom babes sprawled across his bikes, his tattoos, his pit bull, his shop and some text about his views on the world.

bus collide outside Allegheny General Hospital

The crash happened at East North Avenue and Sandusky Street, killing Douglas Cotton, 41, of the HomewoodBrushton area.

Pittsburgh police said the motorcyclist appeared to have the green light as the bus turned left onto Sandusky Street.

Its nice outside. He was trying to show off on the bike and he pulled a wheelie, and the bus cut out in front of him, trying to make the light and it was just bad timing, said a witness, who asked to remain unidentified.

Investigators spent hours reconstructing the scene, examining the tire marks, the bus and talking to witnesses.

Witnesses say someone on the bus got off immediately to perform CPR, but as the man was taken just feet into the hospital, it was too late. His friends who ride in a group they call the Independent Riders are in disbelief.

Its never been us; its always been someone else. This is the first time its hit home like this, and this is going to hurt, said the victims friend, Ron Smith.

Smith described Cotton as a hardworking guy, worked at AAA towing, going to school for truck driving for his son. Good, loving guy. Hes the kind of guy, as far as having your back, he had your back.

Cat5E or Cat 6

Im new to networking and want to set up a new home network with my pc and router to ensure a faster transmission for gaming.

Currently my routers on the end of an extension on a not inconsiderable length of normal telephone extension cable. As Ive been having some problems not necessarily cable related Ive decided to move the router to the main phone point in the house, install a network socket by it and then use network cable to run to the pc where Ill install another network socket and connect via a patch cable. Im thinking thisa should give a much better connection all round.

The problem is I dont know whch standard of cable to use. I currently have 8mb ADSL although the UK is talking of increasing this 20mb in some areas. What cable do I need for maximum throughput from a single pc?

Thats good news as I have stockist who does a Cat5e kit 26.99 buys:

50m Cat 5E cable UTP twisted pair cable. 4 x RJ45 twin surface mount boxes. 4 x RJ45 Cat 5E patch leads red, yellow, green, blue. 1 x combined cable jacket stripper and krone tool. 1 x 90 / 180 Keystone jack fixture. 4 x RJ45 Keystone jack Cat 5E.

The boxes arent the flush type but given the cost, theyre easily replaceable.

I reckon thats a pretty good deal. Cheapest I could find Cat6 cable was 36 without any of the extras.

The general difference between CAT5E and CAT6 is the transmission performance, and extension of the available bandwidth from 100 MHz to 200 MHz. This includes better insertion loss, NEXT, return loss, ELFEXT. These improvements provide a higher signaltonoise ratio, allowing higher reliability for current applications and higher data rates for future applications. I, being in the military, am using networking standers that require the higher bandwidth of the CAT6, but there are no readably available routers that can support the traffic that the CAT6 cable can. So you are wasting your money getting CAT6, but in the near future CAT5E will go the way of the cable!

I dont believe this.

Cat5e, as already said, can handle the 1000 Mbps ethernet just fine. Cat6 is more expensive, more difficult to deal with, and offers no advantage whatsoever for standard ethernet LANs up to and including gigabit.

That is not to say that there are not niche uses for Cat6, as you have stated.

I predict that it will be Cat6 that will go the way of Cat4 try to buy any Cat4 cable lately? Or have any need to?, since the 250MHz bandwidth is not high enough to handle the next jump in LAN communications, 10 gigabit.

For that you will need either Cat6e or Cat7 500 MHz and 650 MHz, respectively.

Cat5e will be around for as long as people continue to put in 100 and 1000 Mbps ethernet. And, the transition from 100 to 1000 is just beginning. It has a long way to go.

Reds Best Games

I enlisted the help of Reds historian Greg Rhodes and the Reds Hall of Fame and Museums Chris Eckes, and together we came up with what we regard as arguably the 40 best regular season home victories in modern Reds history 1956present. We didnt include milestone games such as Pete Roses hit No. 4,192 because we basically knew they were coming. The acid test was this: The game had to stand by itself. For me, Reds modern history began when Frank Robinson donned the wishbone C as a rookie in 1956, and played with such luminaries as Ted Kluszewski, Wally Post, Gus Bell and Joe Nuxhall. Im going to stick with that.

Here they are in descending order. Go to our Enquirer Reds Facebook page and tell us what you think.

May 2, 1988: The Reds were up 30 and were one strike away from notching their first perfect game as a franchise when pitcher Ron Robinson began losing his shirt faster than a tourist playing threecard Monte. First went the perfect game and nohitter on a single to Montreal Expos pinchhitter Wallace Johnson, then the shutout on a 2run homer to Tim Raines and finally the complete game when manager Pete Rose summoned Johnny Franco to close it out. But Robinson didnt lose everything. He got the victory.

May 7, 2013: One strike from a Reds loss, pinchhitter Devin Mesoraco goes deep to tie the game 44, and the next batter, ShinSoo Choo, does the same to win it all off the most unlikelytogiveuplongballs Atlanta Braves reliever Craig Kimbrel. He had struck out the first two hitters in the 9th and was going for his 100th career save, having allowed only one homer all season. But Kimbrel boxed himself into a corner by running the count full to Mesoraco, who blasted the next pitch over the centerfield wall. Four pitches later, Choo went downtown in the 54 Reds victory.

June 16, 1978: Tom Seaver nohits St. Louis 40 after giving up a leadoff walk in the 9th. We waived our special occasions rule to allow for this one, because it was a relatively taut game. For those who wonder why we didnt include any of Jim Maloneys nohitters, its because one of them was at Wrigley Field, another came in loss the nono was later defrocked because it was broken up in extra innings and the other one came in a 100 victory, totally devoid of any game suspense beyond whether Maloney would get the nohitter.

Apri 15, 1969: Trailing the San Francisco Giants 85 going into the 9th inning, the Reds score 3 runs on a Bobby Tolan RBI double and RBI singles by Tony Perez and Johnny Bench to send it to extra innings. The Giants scored twice in the top of the 10th, but the Reds tied it back up with an RBI groundout by Alex Johnson and a sacrifice fly by Lee May. Johnson led off the 12th with a triple off future Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry, and when the Giants intentionally walked the bases full, hoping for double play, Bench made them pay with an RBI single off Perry for the 1110 victory.

July 5, 1980: Behind one of the best and longest Reds relief appearances in history, the great

Mario Soto replaces Bruce Berenyi 6 runs, 5 hits with one out in the first inning of a

doubleheader, and throws 8 2/3 innings of 3hit, shutout ball as the Reds come back to

win 86. The Reds hitting stars were Dave Concepcion, Ken Griffey Sr., Ray Knight and

Joe Nolan. Joe Morgan was back with the Astros after eight seasons in Cincinnati. Soto

struck him out to end the first inning and twice popped him out.

July 1, 1973: The Los Angeles Dodgers starter Don Sutton is a twostrike screwball away from dropping the Reds 12 games back in the National League West race, when thirdstring catcher Hal King rips a 3run homer scoring Tony Perez and Darrel Chaney to give the Reds a stunning 43 victory. The Reds win the second game of the doubleheader on a twoout walkoff single by Perez. Ignited by Kings home run and Perez single, the Reds go on a 6026 tear from July 1 forward to win the West, 3 1/2 games ahead of the Dodgers.

Carjacking victim says Christopher Dorner was calm

There was no question.

PHOTOS: Christopher DornerTeams of officers who had sought the fugitive exLos Angeles police officer since last week were closing in. Dorner pointed the gun at Heltebrake and ordered him to get out of his truck.I dont want to hurt you. He wasnt wildeyed, just almost professional, he said. He was on a mission. It was clear I wasnt part of his agenda and there were other people down the road that were part of his agenda, he said. Andrew Neiman said the agency had returned to normal patrol operations but about a dozen of the targets would continue to be protected until the remains are positively identified. Patrick Foy with the California Fish and Wildlife Department, which aided the search, said two housekeepers surprised Dorner in the cabin when they came to clean it Tuesday morning.

It was horrifying to listen to that firefight and to hear those words. 6 after they connected the Feb. Randal Quan for providing poor representation before a police disciplinary board that fired him for filing a false report. You have awoken a sleeping giant.

Its daylight most of the time in Alaska during the summer, but the stars certainly aligned for Brody Greer. Greer, from BeltonHonea Path High School, went up to Kenai, in the Southern part of Alaska, to play a couple of month for the Peninsula Oilers before coming back to Spartanburg for his senior season at USC Upstate. The Alaskan Baseball League sounded like a cool place to play literally, with average temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees in the summertime. Lancaster, who went to Dutch Fork High School, knocked one out of Duncan Park in the deciding fifthgame of the state finals qualifying series against Spartanburg Post 28. That was for his grandfather. The weather today just like yesterday, tomorrow and all summer will be just like Waffle House hash browns. Scattered, smothered and covered. There will be scattered storms, followed by smothering humidity and at some point, youll be running for cover. Rain has made a muddy mess of the American Legion baseball season, turning fields into lakes and causinghavoc with schedules. Somehow, all the games were played.
